The short version
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up proteins, just fewer of them linked together (NCI Dictionary). When that chain gets long enough, scientists call it a protein instead. That’s really the whole idea.
Here’s the part the hype skips: your body already makes and uses peptides all the time. They’re not foreign chemicals — many are natural signaling molecules your cells use to send instructions.
So what do peptides actually do?
Think of many peptides as messengers. They carry a signal to a cell and tell it to act — for example, to release a hormone, help manage blood sugar, or support tissue maintenance and repair. Different peptides carry different messages, which is why they’re studied across so many areas of medicine (J. Peptide Science review).
What a specific peptide does — and how strong the evidence is behind it — varies a lot from one peptide to the next. That’s exactly why a peptide should be evaluated by a licensed provider, not picked off a menu.
You already know two peptides
- Insulin. The insulin that has treated diabetes since 1922 is a peptide hormone (UMass Chan Medical School).
- GLP-1 medications. The active ingredients in well-known GLP-1 medications — semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) — are peptides (NIH review).
So when someone frames peptides as fringe or brand-new, that’s the misinformation talking. Some peptides are decades-old, FDA-approved medicines.
“Peptide” isn’t one thing
This is the trap people fall into online. “Peptides” covers a huge range — some are FDA-approved drugs, some are prepared by licensed compounding pharmacies for a specific patient, and some are grey-market products sold with no testing at all. They are not the same, and the difference matters for your safety.
