Some of the most common requests we see are from women looking for a provider who will take perimenopause and menopause seriously, review labs, and talk through options without dismissing symptoms or overselling a fix. That is what a hormone evaluation is for.
What the evaluation covers
- Your symptoms and timeline. Hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood changes, brain fog, low libido, vaginal dryness, and changes in your cycle.
- Other causes that look the same. Thyroid, iron, sleep disorders, medications, and stress can all mimic hormonal symptoms and need to be ruled in or out.
- Labs where they help. Some hormone questions are answered by history alone; others need labs. Your provider will say which apply to you and what they cost before ordering.
- Your history and contraindications. Personal and family history shape which options are safe.
- A plan you understand. Sometimes that is hormone therapy. Sometimes it is a sleep or thyroid workup first. Sometimes it is non-hormonal options.
What the evidence supports
- Hormone therapy for hot flashes and night sweats. The Menopause Society’s 2022 position statement describes hormone therapy as the most effective treatment for these symptoms and for the genitourinary syndrome of menopause, with a favorable benefit-risk balance for women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause who have no contraindications. Risks differ by type, dose, route, timing, and whether a progestogen is used.
- Testosterone for women. The 2019 global consensus statement concluded the only evidence-based indication is low sexual desire after menopause, with a moderate effect, and found no clear benefit for mood, cognition, or muscle. In the United States there is no FDA-approved testosterone product for women, so any use is off-label and an individualized provider decision.
We state this plainly because you deserve the real picture, not a promise.
